Abstract:

The article examines the origin, word-formation structure and primary semantics of 49 surnames. 25 of them have been a subject to such an analysis in the work of S. Ilchev (1969), but they were considered as unclear (nrs 1– 15) or incorrectly analyzed (nrs 16–25)-. We have attracted here for an analysis 24 more surnames, which are near allied to several of them, but not been mentioned in the work of S. Ilchev. Among the problems that were more difficult to solve, this is the homonymу, which takes the first place. It is mainly due to sound changes in the stems, mostly related to the reduction of the broad vowels. The homonymy can be between two languages, most often Turkish vs. Bulgarian (f.ex. Turk. FN Reis ~ Bulg. appellative рейс ‘bus’), or within Bulgarian language (FN Тимньо – from Тим¥н or Евт£мий) or another language (f.ex. the SN Органджиев is on the basis of the Turk. appell. yorgancý ‘quilt-maker’ – or urgancý ‘rope-maker’). In relation of homonymy can be an appellative and the motivated by him first name (f.ex. Turk. вlim ‘scholars’ and FN Alim).
