Abstract:

The present paper is a new scrutiny of the history of Athens from the time of Pericles. The autor deals with a still poorly examined problem - the antique anthropo- and micro-anthroponymy. The components of the first name of Pericles are studied as well as the probable motivation for his naming. The possibility that this anthroponym was newly created in classical Athens is discussed in the paper. Attention is paid to the famous Pericles’ byname “Olimpian” and to the fact that he was compared to the goddess Peitho.
