Establishment of the Archbishopric of Turnovo – internal state and religious-political dimensions

Abstract:

In 1185 in Bulgaria explodes uprising, headed by two brothers Petar and Asen. The problem of establishment of the Archbishopric of Turnovo stay in close contact with uprising. After the consecration of the church „St. Dimitar” follow several key events: resumption of Bulgarian kingdom, ordination of the head of the Bulgarian church and the coronation of the Bulgarian king. Establishment of the Archbishopric of Turnovo due to aspiration on Asenevtsi to full national liberation – political and spiritual. Guided by idea, that Turnovo continues state and church traditions оn the First Bulgarian country, Asenevtsi openly impose the newly establishment Archbishopric laying the foundation of independent church management. Appoited a new Archbishop Vasili, in the new Bulgarian capital Turnovo, who are subject to all Bulgarian bishops. Standing on Vasili at the head of the Turnovo church have not only political sounding. It means not only rejection of Byzantine spiritual authority,but to placement beginning of a new Local Church.
