Abstract:

The campaigns of Vladislav Varnenchik from 1443–1444 mark the last stage of the resistance of united Christian Europe against the Ottoman invaders. These events are subject of research by many scientists. The issue is widespread both in the Bulgarian and foreign historiography. The objective of this work is the presentation of the two last crusades against the Turks in the light of the Bulgarian historical research. A similar review of research was made about four decades ago by Bistra Tsvetkova. The development of the issue in recent years by various researchers and the presence of a significant amount of scientific literature presuppose a new review on the studies devoted to Vladislav Varnenchik and the events from the middle of the XV century to be made. Among the numerous studies on the issue, the research of the Shkorpil brothers, Hristo Kolarov and Bistra Tsvetkova has to be pointed out. Thanks to their years-long efforts the scientific problems have been significantly developed. A review on the research into the Bulgarian historiography shows that the events arouse deep interest among historians. This is quite normal as the anti-Ottoman military campaigns from 1443–1444 are some of the most important moments in the history of late medieval Europe. Despite the numerous studies and the great number of narrative sources used, the debatable moments about the two military campaigns of Vladislav Varnenchik are many. This is due to the fact that the information provided to us by the different sources is too controversial. These details suggest a new reading of history and correction of already existing opinions.
