Abstract:
Transforming Roman legions from conscripts into professional is one of the most important changes in Roman troops. It affects not only the military, but also the social and political organization of Rome. In modern historiography, there are two main hypotheses about this change. According to the more widespread theory, the seven-time consul Gaius Marius is the main contributor to this process, which reformed the Roman legions. There is also the opposite thesis that he does not carry out a reform in the legions and they are gradually changing under the influence of various objective factors. The analysis of the so-called “Reform of Marius” shows that it is a fiction. The professionalism of the legions is a gradual process of transforming the Roman troops from civilian volunteers into professional military corporations. It lasts almost two centuries since the Second Punic War until the creation of the Octavian August Principate.
