Abstract:
The paper attempts to clarify the nature of space through the lens of geographical science. It has been analyzed as an abstract concept, i.e. a construct that influences social relations. The dynamics of space is clarified through its basic characteristics: territoriality, complexity and concreteness. The main features of space are derived: wholeness, limit, zoning, cyclicity, centripetal and spatial polymorphism. The concepts of polarized economic development are highlighted. Emphasis is placed on models of monocentric and polycentric development, as well as on models based on homogeneous regions.
