Abstract:

The rock monastery complex of Gospodev Dol (Lord’s Ravine) is one of the isolated, specific, anthropogenic karst formations along the valley of the Rusenski Lom River. It is famous for some of the oldest preserved samples of medieval fine arts, which are part of the cultural heritage of the medieval Tarnovo Artistic School. After a thorough speleological mapping of the formations, an attempt was made for the first time to make a full reconstruction of the scope, the specific features and the purpose of the separate elements of the medieval complex, its place and role as a spiritual centre in the system of the Ivanovo rock-hewn monasteries.
