Abstract:

The main objective of the study is to monitor crops for the 2019/2020 agricultural year with the use of low resolution NDVI and MVHI products of NASA and summary statistics of ground truth from the monthly bulletins of NIMH and annual report by the Bulgarian Ministry of agriculture, food and forestry for the territory of Bulgaria. The hypothesis tested in the study is that the satellite NDVI and MVHI products show similarities and match the ground truth, which allows for a satellite monitoring of winter wheat on a national and local level. The results from the study show that the continuous drought, which started in 2019 and continued to 2020, had significant effect on the yield of winter wheat (19.1% less yield) with significant regional variations, which match very well with the decadal satellite products.
