Abstract:

The Bulgarian municipality in Karlovo, established during the period of the National Revival, in the epoch of Tanzimat, became an institution of local self-government, protecting the interests and prosperity of the community. The municipality worked for the development of education in the Revival town. In addition to the implementation of fiscal and intermediary functions it organized the construction of public buildings and rose for the support of public institutions like churches, schools, etc. From the available historical documents, it is clear that the Karlovo municipality actively participated in the movement for independent Bulgarian church hierarchy and national emancipation in the Plovdiv diocese.
