Abstract:
The article highlights some examples of invented tradition in Bulgaria. Discussing tourism and invented traditions the stress is laid on the economic factors, the benefits and drawbacks to receiving areas and the impact of tourism on “authentic” customs, practices and folklore. Using the case of Bulgaria, this article postulates that natives can show their specific rituals, celebrations, or events to the foreign guests, and these spectacles can make an enormous contribution by being a tool of creating and asserting local identity, positive image and easier recognition of a tourist destination.
