Abstract:

During the Cold War and the decolonization of some countries in the socalled “Third World,” the education of students became a new field of competition between the USA and the USSR, as well as their allies. Both blocs attracted citizens from developing countries by providing scholarships. In the 1960s, educational institutions were opened in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to educate students from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This article analyzes Bulgaria’s contribution to providing educational opportunities to citizens of developing countries during the 1960s. It draws on documents from the Central State Archives, the so-called “Dossier Commissions”, and relevant scientific research.
