As the oldest form of manifestation and realization of the strong personality in public life, leadership is the subject of attention. The interest in leadership as a phenomenon dates back to the first human communities. The development presents a brief characteristic of the notion of “leadership” and its essence. This article discusses effective leadership and the problems of achieving it. A distinction is made between the concepts of leadership and guidance. The problems of Bulgarian companies in the field of leadership are presented. The personal qualities and characteristics that a successful leader must possess are considered. The article clarifies some problems of leadership theory, the reasons responsible for their emergence and the possibilities to solve them. Recommendations have been issued to address the problems in the field of leadership.
