Only the road transport offers opportunities for shipments based on the “from door – to door” system and relatively easily adapts to quickly changing conditions of the transport market and to the requirements of the travellers and freight owners. Its speed and maneuverability allows it to be used as main transport (from initial to final destination) just as well as for carriage to and from railway stations, harbours and airports, which makes it a necessary addition to the rest of transportation types. In the current research is analysed the development of the freight and passenger road carriage in Bulgaria for the period of 2011–2020. The duration of the period (10 years) allows basic trends in the development of the road transport to be outlined. The period reviewed starts with the years of recovery of the economy of the country from the worldwide financial-economic crisis and ends with the entering into the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The main goal of the study is to follow the trends of the development of the freight and passenger road transport and to determine how the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the road transportation activities.
