The most important factor in a university’s competitiveness constitutes its reputation in the national and international education market. Ratings of universities play an important role in this process. By reaching top positions in global or national rankings, a university quickly increases its attractiveness not only for prospective students, but also for employers and the state. In recent years, in response to global trends towards sustainable development and in recognition of the key role of universities as a driving force in achieving them, new ratings have emerged assessing their contribution in this direction. The aim of this paper is to explore the purpose and methodology of international popular rankings assessing universities in the implementation of the SDGs. Three international rankings are presented to fulfill this purpose - the THE Impact Rankings Specialized Ranking, the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability and the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The results of the survey may be useful to universities in Bulgaria that wish to be included and assessed in these rankings
