Резюме:
Japan was the largest Asian trading partner of the EEC/EU in the second half of the 20th century. However, soon after China’s admission to the World Trade Organization on December 11, 2001, Japan lost its leadership to it and was relegated to second place. In recent years, it has faced strong competition in the single European market from both the Republic of Korea and India. Nevertheless, expectations are that in the second quarter of the 21st century it will be able to maintain its current position due to the EU–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement and the EU–Japan Strategic Partnership Agreement. Being signed on 17 July 2018 in Tokyo, these agreements took effect on February 1, 2019 and January 1, 2025, respectively. They represent a joint effort to counter the protectionist US policy pursued by the first administration of Donald Trump (January 20, 2017–January 20, 2021). Given the even tougher customs policy of the second Trump administration (January 20, 2025–present), often defined as neo-mercantilism, the importance of both agreements is expected to grow. It is possible that the reduction in trade between the US and the EU on the one hand, and the US and Japan on the other, could lead to a significant increase in trade relations between the EU and Japan.
