Abstract:

By 2050, more than 80% of Europe’s population is expected to live in urban areas. The increased need for food, housing and employment will also increase the need for land needed for human activities. We need solutions that help achieve a sustainable, resource-efficient and green economy. In pursuance of the European Green Pact, the Farm-to-Table Strategy is built on three pillars: ensuring that the food chain has a neutral or positive impact on the environment; ensuring food security, nutrition and public health; food affordability and fair returns in the food supply chain. Among the goals of the strategy are: stimulating sustainable food production and processing; the quantities of food to provide security for the food system; promoting sustainable consumption; promoting consumer behavior that limits food waste and combating food fraud. This means that the food system must provide “healthy food in sufficient quantities and at affordable prices”.
