Abstract:
Restrictive measures (also called “sanctions”) are an essential tool of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union. They are imposed to induce a change in the policy or actions of their object – a state, part of a state, government, entity, or individual(s) in either a personal or official capacity. Since March 2014, the EU has imposed more and more restrictive measures in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, and the illegal annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. These measures aim to weaken the Russian Federation economically, depriving it of key technologies and markets and significantly limiting its ability to wage war.
