Abstract:

This study explores the development of Bulgarian maritime law after the Liberation in 1878, emphasizing the establishment of the Bulgarian Maritime Administration and the services provided at Bulgarian ports, in particular the towage and pilotage services and the salvage performed at the ports. The subject of research is the domestic legislation, as well as the international treaties that were in force for the Republic of Bulgaria during the period 1879–1944, which can be referred to as the first of the three stages of the development of Bulgarian maritime law. The most important legal acts for this period, to which special attention has been paid, are the 1908 Commercial Maritime Act and the 1931 Merchant Shipping Act.
