Abstract:
The article discusses a recent judgement of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Case C-375/21. The preliminary reference from the Bulgarian Supreme Administrative Court concerns an integrated permit allowing the biggest thermal power plant in Bulgaria to emit sulphur dioxide in violation of the new emission standards. The paper also provides a summary of the key messages of the judgment and analyzes the links between two European legislative acts on air quality – the Air Quality Directive and the Industrial Emissions Directive. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the expected impact of the judgment in the national legal system.
