Abstract:
The crime of slavery has been introduced in European criminal legislations ever since 2000 but still not in Bulgaria. Fragmented hypotheses of practices similar to slavery may find reference in some crimes against marriage, family and youth and human trafficking aimed at compulsory submission, but the protection given by the Bulgarian law is insufficient. The article argues that the phenomenon is independent and recognizable within the structure of crime and until expressly criminalized it enjoys tolerance which stimulates its being committed, typically together with other grave crimes.
Keywords:
slavery, servitude, forced submission, human trafficking, exploitation, forced marriage, prostitution, debt bondage.
