Abstract:

The monasteries dating back to the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th-14th centuries) could be classified into two groups: monasteries situated in the capital of the state and monasteries situated in the country. The capital monasteries were erected within the walls of the fortresses Tsarevets and Trapesitsa and in the quarter named “The New Town”. The country monasteries could be divided into two subgroups: some were situated in the hinterland of Tirnovgrad and others - in the other regions of the medieval Bulgarian State. Presenting the medieval Bulgarian monasteries the author accentuates on those that have been excavated and studied.
