Abstract:
The article discusses the issues connected with the way of representation of Islamic sects and orders in the works of West-European authors from 16th and 17th centuries. The author differentiates the type of information included in Travel Literature (too superficial and concise) and in the first attempts for complete exposition of Islamic mysticism in the Ottoman Empire (especially Paul Rycaut). Attention has been paid to the reliability of the accounts and to the premises for the subjectivity and partiality they demonstrate.
