Abstract:
The article presents memories of Muslims inhabiting Rhodope Mountain concerning atheistic assimilatory policies of communists’ which was openly aggressive during the so called „Renaissance Process” (1984–1989). The ethnography consists of stories about events dating about Balkan wars (1912– 1913), early 70s and 80s. It is discussed how the repressions directed to Muslim holy places are structuring the traumatic memory of Muslims. Memories construction follows the universal ancient culture matrix based on the concept about Divine punishment on people breaking the rules of respect to holy shrines. Those memories are constantly presented in communicative and culture memories of Muslim groups as a warning for next generations.
