Abstract:

The aim of this article is to characterize the features of social interactions between the brethren, pilgrims and tourists near the seclusions, nameless saints’ remains and closed coffins in Kyiv Dormition Caves lavra. The main sources are the travelogues and conventual property documents. The monks tried to explain the sense of the seclusions and myrrh-pouring heads more than the sense of open and closed coffins of the saints with known names. They also tried to make the seclusions more visible and to give some examples of correct pray to the nameless saints. The brethren probably wanted to avoid prayers’ mistrust.
