Abstract:

Ohtum was one of the most powerful Bulgarian nobles of the beginning of the 11th century. He controlled a large territory. He had many nobles, a sizeable army and a vast estate. Despite being under the rule of the Hungarian king Stephen I, Ohtum didn’t recognize his authority and acted like a ruler himself. For this reason, the Hungarians led a military campaign against him. The betrayal of Chanadin led to his death. Taking over his domain around 1028–1030, the Hungarians had wiped out one of the last remnants of the First Bulgarian tsardom.
