Abstract:
University museums originated from the needs of the educational process and the developing science nowadays. They store a major part of the world’s cultural heritage, and donation is among the main ways of funding them. The purpose of this article is to provide a historical overview of donation practices that led to the establishment of some of the most significant university museums in Europe, and to trace the general development of this phenomenon in Bulgaria. In the course of the study, various methods have been used, such as systemic, structural, chronological, comparative, etc. It also sheds light on the unexplored topic of donation in the museum sector, as the examined and systematized data confirm the existing tradition for objects of museum importance to be gratuitously provided to higher schools.
