Abstract:
In this study, an attempt was made to determine whether and where the “province of Bulgaria”, mentioned in translations of the chronicle of John of Nikiu, existed. A brief historiographical overview of publications that specifically include this information, along with a critical analysis, has been compiled. A hypothesis regarding the location of this region has been proposed. After clarifying the term used by the Ethiopian translators, which was rendered as “province” more than a century ago, it was proven that no connection should be sought with provinces as part of the Roman administrative system. Conclusions have been drawn regarding the dating of the chronicle of John of Nikiu and the existence of an early medieval state north of the mouth of the Danube River.
