Abstract:
People migrating from one place to another are an integral part of human history. The nineteenth century saw several occasions of forced displacement of populations in the wake of war. This was the case with the refugees who returned to Eastern Rumelia in the second half of 1879, only to find themselves homeless during the harsh winter. Rescuing them was a remarkable achievement that united people of different religions and social statuses.
