Among the 9th–10th epigraphic monuments, giving material for
researching of the Medieval Bulgarian culture, the inscriptions on lead plates-amulets,
which are varied both in form and contents, evoke special interest. Recently, the
research of the so-called apocryphal prayers and conjurations had been enriched
with considerable number (around 80) lead amulets containing various in their form
and contents texts in Greek and Old Bulgarian (in Glagolitic and Cyrillic script).
They enter the Bulgarian literature as far back as the late 9th and the early 10th
century and they are recorded in the indices as “false”. Among them there are
conjuring prayers against the devil, against tresavitsi, ognitsi, veshtitsi (witches),
against diseases, for long life and health, amorous and others. Regarding its functions
one and the same text could be read aloud in certain case, rewritten and carried as
a remedy and protection. In the present article texts of various contents against
tresavitsi, incised on five lead 10th-century amulets, which turned out to be the earliest
known from this period.
