The struggle for hegemony is one of the main reasons for the outbreak of the Peloponnesian war and its escalation from a conflict between Athens and Sparta to a war involving many of the countries of the Balkan Peninsula and Persia, but military action unfolds in almost the whole of the Mediterranean. In a sense, Athens’s defeat in the war is a consequence of the fact, that Hellas and the Hellenes are not ready to accept the hegemony of any Hellenic polis over them. This resistance is a consequence of the power of the idea of polis autonomy, which is one of the dominant concepts, on which polis’ is built as a form of state organization.
