The present paper discusses the quality of life in medieval Leicester on the basis of historical documents from the town records for the period from the middle of the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century. The research is focused upon problems such as maintaining sanitation in the common urban space, providing with drinking water and wholesome food for the city dwellers, keeping in repair urban infrastructure and preserving public order. The exertion of efforts for solving those problems, the application of preventive and punitive measures had direct significance for assuring safe and favourable living environment in Leicester. But medieval communities like Leicester developed various simple and effective institutional measures and, by applying them, quite successfully managed water-supply and maintaining sanitation. In the case of Leicester, the analysis of the historical documents shows that the earls of the town and the town authorities purposefully followed a policy of securing a healthy and safe way of life for the citizens, abiding by standards of public health corresponding to the knowledge of the epoch as well as through creating a system for keeping public order.
