The purpose of this academic paper is to present little known and unknown
facts about the early life of Hristo Todorov Stoyanov – a remarkable, but almost unfamiliar
Bulgarian to our contemporaries. He was a representative of the new Bulgarian
intellectual elite from the National Revival Period with a significant contribution
to Bulgaria’s educational activity, struggle for church independence and political life
on the eve of and directly after the Liberation from Ottoman rule. Hristo Stoyanov
was born in Sofia in 1845. He received his initial education at the local Bulgarian
class school. His teacher was Sava Filaretov who played a crucial role in shaping
his character, ideas and views. In 1860, he went to Odessa where he studied at the
Second High School. After his return to Sofia, he became head teacher at St. Cyril
and St. Methodius School. From 1864 to 1868, he studied at the Imperial Moscow
University’s Faculty of Law as a scholarship student of Ivan Denkoglu. Under the
influence of various factors during that period, he formed his personality and clearly
defined his goals which were subordinate to his desire to serve his homeland.
