The article aims to present the unknown to Bulgarian historiography Benedictine monk Gottschalk of Orbais, also known as Gottschalk the Saxon, who lived in the 9th century. The first part of the text presents biographical data about Gottschalk the Saxon – from his entry into the Fulda monastery to his later wanderings in Central Europe, Italy, the Balkans and, in particular, his stay in Croatia at the court of the Croatian prince Trpimir (846 – 864). It also examines the preaching of the doctrine of double predestination, his conflict with Rabanus Maurus (abbot of the monastery of Fulda from 822 and Archbishop of Mainz from 847) and the series of church councils at which Gottschalk was tried, until the end of his life in a monastery dungeon. The essence of his teaching is not addressed, as it is a subject of study for theology. Some of his writings and the history of their discovery in the 20th century are indicated. The second part of the article focuses on a specific part of Gottschalk's work, which mentions that the Benedictine monk visited Bulgaria. This information has remained unknown to Bulgarian historiography. The information about Gottschalk's visit to Bulgaria is analyzed and a dating is proposed. After a brief description of the political situation in Bulgaria and the surrounding territories during the period under consideration, possible reasons and purposes of the visit are presented.
