The article examines the allied relations between the Cuman clans from the Dnieper River and the Bulgarian ruler Boril (1208 – 1218). Previously unknown or little-known sources related to the topic are utilized. The joint military campaigns, the end of the alliance in 1213, and the Vidin rebellion of 1214, during which the Cumans supported Boril's enemies, are analyzed. A new interpretation of sebastokrator Strez’s role as a claimant to the throne is presented. His death in 1214 and the return of Ivan Asen II after 1216 marked the end of Bulgarian-Cuman cooperation.
