The present publication aims to introduce into scholarly circulation two new Byzantine lead seals that originate from the region of the Smyadovo municipality in North-Eastern Bulgaria and are owned by a Bulgarian collector. The first, which is chronologically the earlier of the two seals, is signed by a private individual named Andrew and dates from the 6th – 7th centuries. On its obverse, inscribed in a circle, is a bust of a saint with a nimbus (perhaps St. Andrew?) blessing with his right hand. On the reverse side of the seal there is a cruciform monogram inscribed in a grained circle, on the four ends of which are written the following letters: fused in a ligature alpha (Α) and delta (Δ)at the base; on his right shoulder – nu (Ν); above it is inscribed Ȣ with a smaller ligature; on his left shoulder – epsilon (E); and on the top – rho (Ρ). The monogram contains the first name of the owner of the seal, Andrew (Ἀνδρέας) – in the genitive case – Ἀνδρέου. The second seal dates from the second half of the 13th century. Although broken into two unequal parts, it is in good enough condition to be read. The image on its obverse is of the Holy Virgin Hodegetria, holding the Infant Jesus in her left hand. On its reverse is a four-line inscription, which is untied in the following way: + Σφραγὶς Δούκαινης Ἄννης μικράς δεσποινίς. The seal can be attributed to Empress Anna of Hungary, the wife of the co-emperor Andronicus Doukas Palaeologus, son and successor of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus (1259 – 1282) and thus should be dated to the period 1273 – 1281.
