(Почти) изгубено културно-историческо наследство – средновековната църква край село Горско Ново село, Община Златарица

In 2002, in the vicinity of the village of Gorsko Novo selo, illegal treasure hunters came across a medieval church. Subsequent regular archaeological excavations revealed a single-nave, single-apse church with a narthex on the west side. Unfortunately, the results of these excavations remained unpublished with the exception of brief preliminary reports in the Archaeological Discoveries and Excavations journal. The church was impressive not only with its good construction and ceramic decoration on the facades but also with the preserved mural paintings, whose publication we owe to Prof. M. Prashkova, PhD. Among them, the depiction of a royal/ patron couple on the north wall of the nave is particularly interesting. The church is dated back to the 30s of the 13th century and existed until about the middle of the 14th century. The available information is not sufficient to determine whether it was a monastery, a village church, or а part of a countryside boyar estate. A protective covering with a wooden structure and a tin roof was built over it in 2004. Reinforcement, cleaning, and stabilization of the exposed mural paintings were also carried out. Nonetheless, the project for complete restoration and in situ exhibition has not been realised, and the conservation works remained unfinished. After the tin roof was stolen, murals remained directly exposed to the weather conditions. Currently, they are almost entirely erased, and the church itself is in a poor state. It is missing from both the Archaeological Map of Bulgaria information system and the National Institute of Immovable Cultural Heritage lists. The aim of this article is to draw attention to this church once again, and recognize and present it as an object of cultural-historical heritage with significance for the development of tourism and economy of the village, municipality, and the region of Veliko Tarnovo, as a whole.
