The Late Roman fortress Kovachevsko kale is situated 6 km west of the town of Popovo. Since 1990, it has been the focus of ongoing archeological investigation. Consequently, the museum in the town of Popovo now has almost 4,000 cultural objects added to its archeological fund. Six fibulae – four of which are reported for the first time – found during research in an archaeological context are the subject of this study. The costume elements under examination fall in four categories: Bakodpusta-Zemun, Levitse-Prsha, Bratei, and Cicadas. They all attest to the tribes' presence in the fortress near Popovo and are connected to the Gothic jewelry traditions. Similar examples of the types that are being described can be found in regions where Gothic settlement and cemeteries have been historically and archaeologically confirmed. These include Crimea, the Middle and Lower Danubes, and the Northern Black Sea. It is possible to interpret the known abundance of Levitse-Prsha type fibulae from the region of modern-day northeastern Bulgaria as circumstantial evidence of a production center. The study of the fibulae and the stratigraphic information they contain enhances the knowledge available to historians of the Migration Period. It is a critical first step toward a more thorough investigation of the Gothic monuments found in Bulgaria.
