Abstract:

The article “Nostalgia for Christ’s Childhood” is centered upon Mircea Cartarescu’s short story – “Mendebilul”. The short story basically reproduces the structure of the Bible, it contains in nuce The Old Testament, the New Testament and the Apocalypse. The protagonist, Mendebilul, brings a New Law and changes fundamentally the life of the community of children. He is a character in a postmodern apocripha about the life of Christ. The analysis takes into account the Platonic origin of the character’s ideas (immortality from Plato’s “Fedon”). The article sheds light upon some important fragments from Cartarescu’s short story, camouflaged in a ludic/playful manner (with a studied negligence) in the text. “Mendebilul” is thus interpreted as the reverse of Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”.
