Abstract:

The present paper is a synopsis of a monograph titled “Metaphorical use of English finite verb forms”, which was published in 2004. Finite verb forms constitute a system. Each form has a specific grammatical meaning decomposable into semantic components of the following features: MODALITY, TEMPORALITY, ASPECTUALITY, PERSON, NUMBER, VOICE. The metaphorical use of each verb form is due to either neutralization or transposition of some of those features, or else it results from conventionalization of use of transposed forms. The study reveals that the metaphorical use of finite verb forms depends on pragmatic factors.
