Abstract:

“Appeal (to the southern Slavs)” (“Proglas”) by Ljudevit Gaj is a manifesting text of the Croatian Renaissance movement “illyrism”, published in “The Croatian news” (”Novine chorvatske”) in 1835. The poetical emblem of the manifesto is the image of the “Illyria lyre”, holding an appeal for lingual, cultural and geopolitical unification of the southern Slavs with the flag of the ilirism. Proclaiming themselves as immediate heirs of the ancient “illyrians”, the Croatian renaissance workers with Gaj leading them build an ideology with mythically-utopical character which gives a meaningful amount of fruits in the area of literature, language building and inter-slavic cultural reciprocity. The present article puts the “Appeal” in the iliric culture’s context, studies Gaj’s illyrian ways’ development and his supporters and brings out the origin and genesis of the illyrian idea. The Croatian culturallyhistorical specifics is being defined and accents are put on the mythicallegendary, heraldic and mystificational aspects of the illyrian idea.
