Abstract:

The text introduces and defines the term theopolis, a two-part idiom accommodating both the idea of God – The Father (theos), the crucial agent in the narrative making of history, as well as the idea of the organised community of Bulgarians (polis), who, in their independent medieval fatherland, were experiencing their own glory and freedom. Тhe vision of the theopolis of history is set within the system of authoritarian ethics, where the ultimate authority is the Father, while the doings of his subordinates are ordered in a hierarchical sequence. This paper proposes a theorisation of the archetypes of the collective unconscious that suppresses the inferiority complex of the enslaved Bulgarians and prompts a stiff line of defence, provoking compensatory visions of their own Great History.
