Abstract:
The present article focuses on the interpretative genius of Ivan Meshekov, one of the most outstanding scholars in the field of Bulgarian literary criticism in the period between the two World wars. The literary critical heritage of his work can be read as a text of highly cultural and philosophical, moral and religious, ethno-psychological significance. His “immanent’ readings of the works of authors emblematic of the Bulgarian nation constitute specific “classical critical formulae”, indicative of the unique personal world-view of his perception combined with the paradigmatic and typological construct of the Bulgarian national character. It can therefore be deduced that his studies bring to the foreground his critical and interpretative approach to the portraits of the authors under scrutiny rather than the contemporary historical events and processes that mould them. They appear to be the result of the author’s critical invention which enables him to experience and penetrate into the nature of the literary work itself. Undoubtedly, what is most remarkable about Meshekov’s work is that he has created appropriate critical metaphors, typological constructions, moral and psychological, as well as cultural and philosophical concepts, commeasured with those of the works of Peyo Yavorov, Pencho Slaveykov, Aleko Konstantinov, Nikolaj Liliev, Elin Pelin, Georgi Stamatov, Yordan Yovkov and Elisaveta Bagryana.
