Abstract:

Tricking the censorship, devising new strategies for levelling criticism at the ruling party, and parallel communication between writer and reader on a different textual level are among the most interesting characteristic features of Romanian political novels of the 60s and 70s of the 20th Century. Studying the strategies Romanian writers used in order to escape censorship restrictions and to formulate criticism for Communist regime, one finds a great variety of methods. Treating the issue of alienation in their literary works is one of those methods. The voluntarily chosen solitude and isolation from the outside world, marking the lives of the main characters in the two novels by Marin Preda I am focusing on in my analysis (“The Intruder” and “The Great Loner”) express their stand on certain aspects of socialist society. Behind what at first glance seems passive behaviour on his characters’ part, the novelist conceals his raging cry against the lack of justice and freedom of choice and against violence as a means of control over society. The very fact that the issue of alienation emerged in Romanian literature during the 60s and 70s of the 20th Century is a symptom of negative attitudes towards Communist regime among the members of Romanian society.
