Abstract:

In the chapter “Paisii. The Beginning and the End of Narration”, published in her collection Revivals (1999), Inna Peleva claims that it is impossible to figure out the rules behind the historiographic structure of Paisii’s „Slavobulgarian History”. This paper establishes a dialogue with Peleva’s research and attempts to prove that the historiography of the early Revival Period has its own historyspecific rules, which can be reconstructed by a comparative analysis of Paisii’s history and the other histories put together by Bulgarian or foreign monks, both Eastern Orthodox and Catholic, between the 1760s and the 1790s.
