Short Paper: On Director Solutions in the Film Adaptation of “The Hour-Glass Sanatorium”

Abstract:

The text presents a critical analysis on the movie “The Hour-Glass Sanatorium” (Polish: “Sanatorium pod Klepsydra”) by the Polish director Wojciech Has. The movie is an adaptation of the Bruno Schulz’s story with the same name from the book “Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass”. Despite constructing the plot around this story, Has also made a specific compilation of Bruno Schulz’s writings, keeping the original dialogues of the characters. The texts analyses the way in which the Polish director transforms the literature of the famous modern writer in his own way and the specific cinematographic decisions and reflections, which are not part of the original texts.
