Abstract:
This paper presents a cognitive linguistic analysis of selected aspects of the semantics of ‘dignity’ in Bulgarian and English. First, it introduces a general definition of the concept of ‘dignity’ as understood by native speakers of English and develops an account encompassing the multi-aspectual metaphor-based culturally entrenched nature of ‘dignity’. Second, it offers a discussion of the corresponding Bulgarian concept „достойнство” and how this concept is represented linguistically, followed by an analysis in terms of conceptual metaphor with some references to the English concept of ‘dignity’.
