Abstract:

Diglossia is a type of bilingualism. Historically conditioned, it is characterized by social confrontation in prestige, represented in a functional distribution of the idioms. Internal literary language diglossia was formed during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the reign of the Assen dynasty. It is characteristic only of classical languages, such as Bulgarian, which gained that status after Euthymius’ orthographic and language reform. Taking this aspect into consideration, we can say that diglossia is among the markers of the different stages in the history of a language. In this article we outline the stages of development of diglossia and its variation as a reflection of the historical events that determined the direction of development of Standard Bulgarian.

Keywords:

language situation, bilingualism, diglossia, hierarchical diglossia, internal literary diglossia.
