Abstract:
This paper is an analysis of the semantics of the topos of Nikolai Stavrogin’s study room in F.M. Dostoevsky’s novel Demons (“Бесы”). It examines the composition of the objects, the principles of selection of this composition and the mechanisms in which a given spatial element takes part in constructing the plot. It outlines the role of the study room in Dostoevsky poetics as an integral system. Transformations of the topos in the existing screen adaptations of the novel are also explored.
