Abstract:
In his dissertation dedicated to Dostoevsky (1929), Bakhtin introduced several basic theoretical formulations that were later incorporated and reinterpreted in his analysis of Rabelais’s work (1940). Such early conceptual “pillars” include “two-voice” speech and “non-characteristic” dynamic image, which were subsequently transformed into “ambivalent speech” and “transient grotesque image.”
Keywords:
Rabelais, polyphony, ambivalence, grotesque.
