Abstract:

The article analyses the reception of South Slavic literatures in the Bulgarian cultural environment from the perspective of translation and intertextuality. The Bulgarian reception of South Slavic literatures went through two main stages. The first stage was characterized by a historically conditioned choice of literary works for translation. In linguistic terms, it involved the adaptation of translated texts to specific Bulgarian “realia.” The second stage was marked by an emphasis on the active role of the translator as an agent shaping the image of South Slavic literatures in the receiving culture. During the second stage, translators realized the need for a new approach to translation reflecting the changed historical context. The article demonstrates that the translation reception model of South Slavic literatures in Bulgaria not only aided the dialogue between closely related literatures, but also impacted the development of Bulgarian linguistic and aesthetic norms.
